NYC with Tiny Travelers: A Whirlwind Summer Adventure (2017)

Hello fellow adventurers! I’m back with a tale from the archives – a sun-soaked trip to the vibrant heart of New York City, back in the summer of 2017. Picture this: three little ones, ages 3.5 and twin 1-year-olds, a stroller that became our trusty chariot, and the boundless energy of the Big Apple.

Why New York?

Well, why not? Even with toddlers, we believe in embracing the world. New York, with its iconic landmarks and buzzing atmosphere, was a challenge we were excited to take on. Plus, who can resist those classic yellow cabs?

Navigating the Concrete Jungle

Let’s be real, navigating Manhattan with a double stroller and a toddler is no small feat. The sidewalks, while wide, were often crowded, and the subway stairs were a workout in themselves. But, we learned to embrace the pace and the friendly smiles from fellow New Yorkers who seemed genuinely impressed (or perhaps just amused!) by our intrepid crew.

The Sights and Sounds of Summer

  • Statue of Liberty: We took a ferry to Liberty Island, and even though the little ones were too young to fully grasp the significance, the sheer scale of Lady Liberty was awe-inspiring. The ferry ride itself was a hit, with plenty of open space and fresh air.
  • Central Park: Ah, Central Park – a green oasis amidst the towering skyscrapers. We spent hours here, letting the kids run free, enjoying the playgrounds, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The park provided much needed respite from the busy city streets.
  • The Pulse of the City: The energy in New York is palpable. The constant hum of traffic, the chatter of diverse voices, the street performers – it all created a sensory overload that was both exhilarating and exhausting. We saw busy street scenes filled with yellow taxi cabs, and felt the warm summer air. We also took a car ride over a bridge, providing beautiful views of the city.

Foodie Adventures (and Toddler-Friendly Bites)

New York is a culinary paradise, and we tried to sample as much as possible.

  • We found some great pizza places that were kid friendly.
  • We took advantage of the many delis for quick and easy meals.
  • We also made sure to have plenty of snacks on hand for those inevitable toddler meltdowns.

Fun Facts and Observations

  • Summer Heat: It was HOT! New York in the summer is no joke. We learned to stay hydrated, seek out air-conditioned spaces, and embrace the occasional ice cream break.
  • The Yellow Cab Legacy: Did you know that the iconic yellow cabs were officially mandated to be that color in 1967? It definitely makes for some great photos!
  • Melting Pot: New York City is a true melting pot of cultures. It was wonderful to expose our children to such diversity, even at a young age.

Lessons Learned

  • Patience is Key: Traveling with young children requires a lot of patience. We learned to go with the flow and adjust our plans as needed.
  • Embrace the Chaos: New York is a chaotic city, but that’s part of its charm. We learned to embrace the chaos and find joy in the unexpected moments.
  • Memories Matter: Despite the challenges, we created some amazing memories that we’ll cherish forever.

Final Thoughts

Our New York adventure was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and experiences. It wasn’t always easy, but it was definitely worth it. We wanted to expose our children to the world, and there is no place quite like New York. If you’re considering a trip to New York, even with very young children, my advice is: do it! Just be prepared, and enjoy the ride.

I hope this blog post inspires you to embark on your own family adventures. Remember, the world is waiting to be explored, one step at a time.

Until next time, happy travels!
